Our Mission

To preserve the historic character of our neighborhood through community involvement and recognition of Kensington as a national historic district.

Our movement has grown and contains a committee of volunteers who have worked extensively to document and catalog houses and gather the necessary data required to establish our criteria and reasons why we qualify on the national level.

To achieve this goal, we have engaged a professional historic preservation consultant to assist with the application process at the national and state levels.  We have been working closely with them since August 2024.

Here’s what we have done so far

  • We have catalogued 1650+ individual resources, including homes, businesses, parks, canyons, and the Kensington neon sign - all with photographs and individual architectural descriptions.

  • We created and maintain the Historic Kensington website.

  • We have been and continue to work closely with the Talmadge Park Estates Historic District, which was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Our neighbors in Talmadge have been a tremendous help in providing resources and programming to help us gather the required data.  We have also joined forces with TPEHD, SOHO, the La Jolla Historical Society and Mission Hills Heritage to advocate for historic preservation efforts throughout the city.

What’s next

  • Fundraising efforts are ongoing to gather the needed funds to reach our goal.

  • Research, drafting and editing of the historic designation paperwork is ongoing.

  • We expect to file our finalized application with the California Register of Historic Places (the first step toward national designation) in April 2025.

How can you help?

  • Donate money to fund our efforts.

  • Donate your time to help us fund-raise.

  • Sit on a committee.

  • Help us work on communications and community outreach.

  • Work with us to save and preserve this neighborhood we love so dearly.
